Hong Kong Hotel: Hilton Garden Inn Mongkok – Review

  • Post published:January 23, 2025

Time of stay: Late November-early December 2024

Room booked: Twin Guest Room – Garden View

Price: The room was 30,000 Hilton points per night. Cash prices vary depending on the season, but are usually $120-160 USD per night.

Room

The room itself was on the smaller side (as expected, given most hotel rooms in HK are small), however it was still manageable for my few days stay. The bed mattresses were comfortable.

(Bed sheets messed up by me)
  • My room included a mini fridge, though it was not that cold.
  • The room had a built-in safe, however the buttons were not that responsive. I decided not to use the safe as it seemed untrustworthy.
  • The thermostat was unpredictable. I think it takes a long time for the room to heat up. When trying to sleep, it was very cold – so the AC definitely worked – however, I had to turn the temperature up very high to get the room at all warm.
  • 2 bottles of drinking water were provided daily. There is no drinking water dispenser located in the hotel.
  • 2 pairs of slippers were provided.
  • Housekeeping was provided daily.
  • There is a water kettle and some tea and instant coffee provided and replenished daily.
  • Hair dryer is provided.

This was the night view from my room.

Bathroom

The bathroom door was sliding and did not lock.

The shower showed some signs of wear, but was overall acceptable. Body lotion, hand soap, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner were provided and were all Peter Roth Thomas brand.

There was an adequate amount of space on the sink.

There is no bidet.

The shower was quite slippery, thus a shower mat was provided.

Hotel Amenities

  • There are laundry machines available for use for a fee (though I did not use it).
  • There is no microwave available for use in the hotel.
  • The front desk staff were very nice and were proficient in English.
  • There is a rooftop pool with a nice view, however it is closed during certain seasons. (It was closed when I stayed).

Getting to/from airport

Assuming you are arriving in the daytime from Hong Kong International Airport, you can take the A21 bus and it will drop you off on Nathan Road. The airport bus ride is approximately 45 minutes. You can read full information on the airport bus below:

From there, you will need to walk for approximately 8 minutes or 550m (please keep in mind, Nathan Road can be quite crowded). This is my recommended form of public transportation – if you take the airport train, you will need to transfer again, and the walk from the MTR is just as long (if not, even further) than where the airport bus drops you off on Nathan Road.

Proximity to public transportation

The hotel is approximately 10 minutes walk away from both Yau Mai Tei and Mongkok MTR stations. (~700-800m).

You can also take buses on Nathan Road, where most bus stops on Nathan Road are about an 8 minute walk away (~500m).

Nearby attractions

Nathan Road is an 8 minute walk away, which is a famous (and long) street filled with shops, restaurants, and banks. There is a 7-11 located a few blocks away from the hotel.

As this hotel is located in Mongkok, you are in central Kowloon. The hotel is walking distance from many of the major tourists attractions and local eateries, such as:

  • Ladies Market: Street market with mostly souvenirs. 8 minute walk.
  • Temple Street Night Market: Street market and some street food. 20 minute walk.
  • Fa Yuen Street Market: Street market (the best one in Mongkok, in my opinion!) 16 minute walk.
  • Kam Wah Cafe: Popular cha chaan teng (HK style cafe) famous for their pineapple buns and milk tea. 16 minute walk.

Additionally, you are just a few stops away via MTR from other areas with tourist attractions, such as Tsim Sha Shui (Avenue of the Stars, K11 Musea Mall). The MTR in Hong Kong is quite convenient, so you can also go to Hong Kong Island and most destinations on that side with one transfer.

Conclusion

This hotel stay was overall pleasant, but the rooms could be updated. If I was not paying with Hilton points, and I had found a similar hotel at a cheaper price or even closer to the MTR, I would pick that hotel. If I had gone during a warmer season in Hong Kong, the 10 minute walk to the MTR would feel more exhausting, especially after a day out exploring. However, you are still located very centrally in Mongkok and walking distance away from many attractions.
